Mark Strand: Coming to this

Hicimos lo que quisimos.
Descartamos sueños, prefiriendo la industria pesada
de cada uno, y le hemos dado la bienvenida a la pena
y llamado "ruina" al hábito imposible de romper.

Y ahora aquí estamos.
La cena está lista y no podemos comer.
La carne yace en el blanco lago del plato.
El vino espera.

Llegar a esto
tiene sus ventajas: nada es prometido, nada es arrebatado.
No tenemos corazón ni gracia salvadora,
ni lugar adonde ir, ni razón para quedarnos.

Coming to this
has its rewards: nothing is promised, nothing is taken away. 
We have no heart or saving grace,
no place to go, no reason to remain.
